IMPORT /Traveling into the USA
What is CEM Quarantine?
Federal Law requires that all breeding horses over the age of two (2) years traveling to the United States from a country that is known to have the disease Contagious Equine Metritis (CEM) must go to a CEM quarantine facility for rigorous testing and treatment. Geldings are not considered breeding horses.
CEM is a venereal disease of horses caused by bacteria and spread through breeding contact. Ultimately, CEM results in a mare's inability to conceive. Stallions can carry and spread this disease, but do not always show clinical signs.
Nedpoint Quarantine facility
Our quarantine facility is located on the south east corner of the ranch, separated from the rest of the training and breeding facility.
Each horse is provided with a 12'x12' stall and has access to daily individual turnout pens. Horses can be exercised on horse walker and/or water treadmill (additional charges) to keep them conditioned during quarantine.
Our facility is an approved USDA /C.E.M. import (into USA)quarantine facility.
Mares in CEM Quarantine
The CEM quarantine for a mare includes up to 30 days board which is required for the CEM testing protocol to be conducted. Mares are tested and cultured periodically throughout their 30 days quarantine period.
Once testing is completed and a negative result obtained, the USDA will issue an official release from the quarantine facility, then the import mare is free to leave the CEM quarantine facility for final destination in the USA.
Stallions in CEM Quarantine
The CEM quarantine for a stallion includes up to 30 days board which is required for the CEM testing protocol to be conducted. To begin the testing of each stallion, they must breed by life cover 2 CEM free tested ranch mares.
Ovariectomized (no ovaries) mares are used for the test breeding so that they can be easily synchronized and no pregnancy can result. They are bred to the stallion, then cultured and a blood sample taken to establish that no CEM bacteria have been transmitted from the stallion to the mare. This procedure is essential to validate a negative result. The testing procedure of the stallion and the CEM-free tested mares takes approximately 30 days to complete.
A negative CEM test from both the stallion and the 2 test mares will result in an official release from the USDA, the imported stallion is then free to leave the CEM quarantine facility for final destination in the USA.
